The entire staff was extremely kind. I was given thorough explanations of my options, what was happening during each point in the procedure, and post-procedure care and expectations. Aside from the excellent communication from the entire staff, the work itself is top-tier. My teeth truly have never looked better!

Thank you to the entire team, and I cannot recommend them enough!

The Relationship Between Dental Crowns and Dental Implants

Our Glastonbury, CT, dentist can restore your smile with a dental crown or a dental implant and a crown, depending on your needs.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are a type of screw placed in your gums, taking the spot of a missing or extracted tooth. After they are secure, your dentist will fix a crown over the implant, creating a natural-looking tooth.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns mimic a natural tooth. They can fit over a damaged or filed tooth, as well as an implant, depending on your needs. They come in materials such as porcelain, providing a subtle, lifelike improvement to your smile.

How Can a Dentist Use a Dental Crown to Restore My Smile?

Dental crowns are often recommended when patients have issues that cannot be treated using fillings, inlays, or onlays. They are used to protect the remaining tooth structure and avoid the need for extraction. They can:

Provide Support for Damaged Teeth

These restorations fit over severely damaged or decayed teeth. Compromised tooth structure is removed, and a custom crown is crafted to fit over the remaining portion of the tooth, restoring your ability to bite and chew properly.

Achieve a Natural-Looking Upgrade

Sometimes stains, inconsistent shaping, and other cosmetic flaws cannot be addressed with solutions like whitening or veneers. In these cases, custom crowns can provide the desired enhancement by covering the entire tooth.

Replace a Lost or Damaged Tooth

Dental crowns are also used for single-tooth replacement. A dental bridge consists of a false tooth flanked by two crowns to anchor it in place. For the right candidates, they can also be used to cap dental implants for complete tooth replacement.

I have a dentist phobia. I almost cancelled my free consultation. I'm extremely glad I didn't. He made me feel very safe and almost completely comfortable. I'm still dealing with my phobia but he has made it somewhat easier to try to deal with it.

Candidacy

A dental crown may be recommended if you:

Have Severe Tooth Damage

Chips, cracks, and decay are typically treated with fillings, bonding, or even veneers. When these are not viable options, porcelain crowns may be the best option.

Have Sufficient Remaining Tooth Structure

A crown is only able to cap teeth that have enough healthy structure remaining. When teeth are too structurally compromised to support a crown, extraction is the only option.

Are Committed to Long-term Care

These restorations can last for many years as long as patients take proper care of them. That means brushing and flossing every day and visiting the dentist every six months for regular checkups.

The Dental Crown Procedure A Treatment Timeline

For patients receiving traditional restorations, the procedure will take roughly two weeks. Here is a step-by-step look at the treatment process:
If your restoration is being made off-site, a temporary crown will be placed while you wait.
If your restoration is being made off-site, a temporary crown will be placed while you wait.

Assessing Candidacy

We will first determine if crowns are right for your needs. This will involve taking digital X-rays, performing a full exam, and having a discussion of your concerns, goals, and treatment options.
jaw_xrayCreated with Sketch.

Treatment Planning

In order to personalize the crown based on your unique anatomy and cosmetic preferences, you will also meet with us to determine how the restoration will look.

Prepping Teeth

Next, any compromised tissue is removed from the tooth in question. This ensures that there is only healthy structure remaining.

Taking Impressions

Impressions are then taken of the prepped tooth (or dental implant). These impressions are either used to create same-day restorations on-site or sent to an off-site lab, where technicians will fabricate the permanent restoration.

Temporary Crowns

If your restoration is being made off-site, a temporary crown will be placed while you wait. The temporary crown protects your tooth as you wait for the permanent crown to be finished.

Placement

When the final restoration is ready, the temporary crown is removed and the prepped tooth is cleaned. We check the fit one last time before the permanent restoration is bonded in place.

Your dental journey doesn't end when we place your crown. The work you do now and through the future can ensure lasting health and functionality.

The Cost of Dental Crowns Price of Treatment

Our dental team will take time to explain all aspects of the cost of dental crowns, including:

Dental Crown Cost Variables

Porcelain crowns costs vary based on the biomaterial, the complexity of the case, and the need for additional procedures (e.g., root canal, build-up, extraction).

Insurance

Since these restorations are placed to improve oral health, they are usually covered by insurance. You can count on our friendly staff to work with your provider to secure the best possible coverage.

Financing Options

If you are uninsured and unable to pay immediately out of pocket, there are financing options available through CareCredit®. These payment plans divide the total cost of treatment into affordable monthly installments.
