Dr. Steven Balloch has been practicing advanced dentistry for over three decades. After attending Georgetown Dental School and practicing with the Army Dental Corps, he opened his practice in Hartford. For his respected work as a dentist, he has earned countless accolades, such as the Hartford Advocate's "Best of" award.
Well, I've been practicing dentistry for a long time now. I spent several years in the service. I've been lucky enough to work with some of the top people in the Army Dental Corps. I mentored with some fabulous technicians. We left the service in the mid-1980s, came to Hartford and we've been providing dental services to our patients ever since.
Professionally, I went to dental school at Georgetown Dental School. Then I did a general practice residency for the Army. Again, I was able to work with some of the top people in different specialty field, and was exposed to the beginnings of cosmetic and reconstructive dentistry. From there we came to Connecticut. I'm a member of all the local and state dental organizations. I was fortunate enough to join the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry in the 1990s, and it was from them that I learned my cosmetic expertise and developed my passion, again working with some of the top people in the country and internationally.
For the Hartford Magazine and for the Connecticut Magazine we've been fortunate enough to be recognized by our peers as top dentists all that time period. Channel 3, WFSB, has recognized us as a Top Doc, and also the Hartford Advocate in their Best Of polls has recognized what we do here for our patients.
I come from a long line of artists, craftsmen, people who made their livings working with their hands, believe it or not. Cobblers, barbers from several generations back. As a young child I loved working with my hands. I loved making things, I loved creating things. So it turns out I just happen to have a great skill set for doing dentistry. To be able to see things in fine detail and to work in 3-dimension is something that I think, I hate to say it, but I think I was born to do this.
I think the thing I enjoy the most, aside from working with my staff day in and day out, is helping patients overcome their fears to having high quality dentistry done, to get them past those kinds of hurdles to a point where they have healthy, functioning mouths and beautiful smiles.
I'm a family man. I went into dentistry so that I could have my own schedule, so that I could spend time with my kids. And so I'm happiest when I'm around my family, my children and now my grandchildren. From a personal point of view, I've always been involved with fitness. I played sports in high school and college. I try to maintain my fitness levels, because I like getting down on the ground, rolling around with my grandkids. And some of the things we do here in the practice, some of these sleep dentistry visits we do can go all day long and it does put a tremendous strain on the body. I found that if I don't keep myself in good shape, I get into trouble. So my wife and I like to spend time on the beach, we like to ski, especially with family, and we like to travel together. We enjoy hanging out with each other.
I think I'd like a new patient to know that I really care about my patients and I want the very best for them. I'm going to treat them as if they were a family member. I'm going to give them the highest level of dental care, and I'm going to do it in a painless fashion.
