Various Types of Dental Implants to Meet Your Unique Needs

When you are looking at your tooth replacement options, you can select from several types of dental implants. Your choices include traditional posts, mini implants, and All-on-4®. All types of dental implants can support beautifully crafted restorations that will provide significant benefits such as an improved appearance and oral function. Nonetheless, one type will be more suited to your oral health, the size of your restoration, and your personal preferences. When you visit our practice near Hartford, CT, Dr. Avinash Bidra will conduct diagnostic tests to determine the right technique and materials for your long-term oral health.  With our decades of experience in dental implant treatment, you can achieve the best results tailored to your unique case.

All types of dental implants can support beautifully crafted restorations that will improve both your appearance and your oral function.

Traditional Dental Implants

Traditional dental implants can support all types of restorations, including crowns, bridges, and dentures. They are a reliable option and can withstand a tremendous amount of force from biting and chewing. Typically, standard implants are between 3.5 and 5 mm wide. Therefore, they do require a certain amount of bone volume for support. If you have suffered bone degeneration because of tooth loss, you may require a bone graft procedure. Using your own or donor tissue to rebuild your bone, Dr. Bidra can ensure a strong base for these posts.

Mini Dental Implants

Photo of different types of dental implantsMini dental implants have a much smaller diameter than traditional implants. They are typically between 1.8 mm to 2 mm wide. It is important to note, however, that mini implants have a higher rate of failure for single-tooth restorations. Dr. Avinash Bidra has conducted research on mini implants and shown that they have insufficient scientific data in the long term but can mini implants can serve as temporary implants.

All-on-4®

The All-on-4 treatment uses at least four specialized implants to uphold a denture. Some patients may require six implants (All-on-6) for a full-arch restoration.  Dr. Bidra will place these implants at strategic angles. This positioning will limit the impact to your jaw and maximize the healthy bone tissue. With this technique, you can often avoid the need for a bone grafting procedure. Another major benefit of All-on-4 implants is that they will often enable you to receive a same-day restoration. Right after your surgery, Dr. Bidra will attach a custom-made bridge over the implants. You will experience some minor discomfort for a few days. However, once discomfort subsides, this prosthesis will give you near-complete dental function for the remainder of your recovery. After your jaw has completely healed around the posts, your dentist will replace the initial restoration with a permanent bridge made of zirconia.
